From UCDavis Health NEWS | December 16, 2019:

In memoriam: Phillip J. Raimondi, M.D.

Dr. Phillip J. Raimondi, former UC Davis Health Primary Care Network Medical Director, died at home on December 3 from complications related to his glioblastoma multiforme. He was 72 years old.

Raimondi joined UC Davis Health in 1993 after 20 years of private practice in Auburn, Calif., when his internal medicine practice was acquired as part of the system’s strategy to establish a community clinic network. He became the network’s medical director shortly thereafter and was responsible for recruitment and expansion. He served in that capacity until 2009.

Because of Raimondi’s efforts, the Primary Care Network grew to over 100 primary care physicians practicing in 10 community-based clinics in the greater Sacramento area. Additionally, he was responsible for the implementation of the electronic medical record, as well as the creation of the existing outreach program to expand specialty care access for clinic patients.

“Dr. Raimondi was a dynamic leader and provided UC Davis Health with expertise in providing community primary care outside the hospital campus,” remarked Nabil Musallam, former director of clinical operations, managed care and contracting at UC Davis Health.

Kevin Tracy, a former UC Davis Health pediatrician and network assistant medical director, added: “Phil was energetic and passionate in developing, growing and improving the network. He loved his job and the people with whom he worked. If something went wrong, he sincerely worked to find out why and how to correct the problem even if his decision was part of the cause. He never rested; he always wanted things to be better for physicians, patients, and all members of the network.”

Though he retired in 2013, Raimondi left an impression on everyone he worked with – including his successor, Kurt Slapnik.

“As a physician, he was ‘patient-centered’ before the word became fashionable. As a leader, he set a shining example that inspired others to follow. He was always available to share an amusing story, give gentle support, and provide needed encouragement…all delivered with kindness, patience, and his own brand of warmhearted humor. Above all else, Phil prioritized building genuine and lasting relationships. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose heart he touched,” said Slapnik.

Longtime friend and colleague, Mike Hooper, medical director, care services and innovation, said: “Phil was known as a warm person who would readily make personal connections with those he met and worked with. He was a skilled clinician and wonderful colleague, mentor and friend to many whom he worked with at UC Davis Health.”

Raimondi earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and attended medical school at UCLA. He also completed his internal medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at UCLA.

Raimondi was an avid outdoorsman who loved fly fishing and hunting. He was also a voracious reader, martini enthusiast and lover of great food. He was known for his outgoing, friendly and direct communication style, which earned him many friends at UC Davis Health. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda, as well as two children and four grandchildren.

“He was a lover of life and everyone in it,” said the Raimondi family. “We were so lucky to have experienced his curiosity and enthusiasm. We will miss him so much.”

Private services will be held in mid-January 2020. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation payable to the UC Davis Foundation to UC Davis School of Medicine’s Phillip J. Raimondi, M.D., Memorial Scholarship Award, 4900 Broadway, Ste 1150, Sacramento, CA 95820.
